Review: Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon

Black pencil liners aren’t really exciting to talk about. I mean, it’s black, and hopefully it does its job. What that job is though can really change from person to person though. For me, a black pencil liner is used to tightline my waterlines (that flap of skin on the inside of your lashes!) and it must. stay. put.

I’ve used many a pencil liner over the years that just completely bled off my water line. They’d rub off, wear off, or just… melt off within about 30 minutes. How freaking frustrating is it to create the perfect eye look and then have it ruined within the hour when your eyeliner suddenly decides to gunk up and go to the inside corner of your eyeball? You might be grossed out right now, but you know it’s happened to you. It’s happened to all of us!

However, I have found a black pencil eyeliner that actually fights the powers of darkness attacking my makeup look, and that badass is the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer. It’s got quite theΒ long superhero name but this little guy knows how to get the job done.

It’s super black and it FRIGGING STAYS PUT on my water lines! So much so that I can actually apply it to my upper water line and it will not transfer to my bottom. I have never experienced this kind of majestic power built into an eye liner before! Seriously! I’m at the point where I’m actively throwing out all my other black pencil liners because when you find the holy grail, why bother use anything else?

Here it is in use on a few looks. Ugh. Look at that beauty. It’s not budging for no one.

Yassss yassssss!

I can get away with wearing this for roughly 13 hours without issue (I don’t think I’ve worn it longer than that). Around the 10Β hour mark I will suffer some very minor outer corner fading, but that’s fairly impressive considering what I’ve had to put up with before. If you’re looking for something to wear like iron, I’d say give the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayons a shot.

Side note: Thank you for all of the well wishes over the last week as I’ve rebuilt my site from scratch. I’ve got 75% of the content back online (thank you, THANK YOU Google Cache!) as of typing this and I should get the remainder done this weekend. With this blog post, I’ll be resuming my normal schedule of Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, with the occasional bonus entry thrown in every now and again. It was only a week, but damn it feels good to be back.

    1. I can’t remember who suggested I try it there, was probably on YouTube. But yeah, never going back. Goodbye all other pencil liners!

    1. They’ve got a rainbow of colours actually! I’ve not tried them because I don’t really want to invest in the money on coloured liners I likely wouldn’t use. (I got this mini in a Sephora 500 point perk set and I think the full size is probably something pricey like $30!)

  1. Perfect! Another reason to go back to Sephora 😊 I can relate to all poorly working eyeliner experiences 😠

  2. Ah, this sounds amazing! Love the pigmentation and over 12 hours on the waterline? Impressive! Have an amazing weekend, Chelle πŸ™‚

    1. I know, I don’t know how anything could last 12 hours on a water line. It sounds physically impossible really.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well Jen!

  3. So glad you’re back!! And happy to hear the rebuild is nearly complete! I have a deluxe sample of this liner but haven’t tried for fear of falling in love with such an expensive staple LoL But if it works this well, I might have to crack it open this weekend!

    1. Thank you! <3

I know, falling hard for the expensive products is kind of heartbreaking isn't it? Goodbye money! However, this has now stopped me from trying any other pencil so I kind of saved money that way? Sorta? lol πŸ˜‰

  4. I have tons of problems finding anything but liquid liner to stay but I think you might have just sold me on this, plus I haven’t tried any Marc Jacobs makeup before.

    1. I got mine as a sample from Sephora during a VIB point perk thingy, but I will definitely be buying the full size when I run out! I’ve never actually tried liquid liner on the inner rim, I figured it would just run off. Hmmm…

  5. You’re back!

That liner sounds incredible! My eyeliner always always ends up looking like crap within about two hours – but I never spend much money on eyeliners because, as you said, they’re just black and kind of boring!

    1. I am! It’s nice to start having new content up. I’ve been hand sifting through all my old stuff that I’m like omg, MOVE ON!

And yeah totally – I hate spending a lot of money on the boring stuff. I used to hate high end mascaras for that reason… but then I found one a really like… BUH BYE MONEY!

  6. Darn, just when my wallet was beginning to breathe :)) Ah well, life is too short so buy the eyeliner I say!!
P.s. eye look is on fleek as usual and the stars are a perfect touch~

    1. Hah, maybe try to pick it up when it’s a Sephora point perk? I’ve seen it up there a few times as a 100 point perk. I got this in the 500 point perk a few months ago! I agree it’s super pricey – it kind of hurts when you look at the price tag!

Thanks re: the eye looks. I was really, REALLY happy with that America inspired one. I wore it out to the World Cup final a few weeks ago! πŸ˜€

  7. I have been searching for an eyeliner I can put on my waterline without having to fix the corners of my eye every hour! I’ll be picking this up next time I’m at Sephora

  8. I got this mini in an eyeliner kit and was really happy with how it wore. I haven’t used it in my waterline just because I feel like I never use eyeliner in my waterline. I feel like I should definitely try it out! Upper waterline seems so scary to line!

    1. Eyeliner in the waterline can be a little bit creepy at first (I mean… it is a pretty liquid surface since it’s so close to your eyeball). And there’s NOTHING attractive about watching someone put eyeliner on their upper water line. haha!
