July 2014 Favourites

201407_favourites

ALRIGHT PEOPLE! It is 1:07 a.m. Friday night (aka Saturday morning), this blog post was supposed to get posted at 8 a.m. this morning, but clearly that did not happen. I’m a few glasses *cough*bottle*cough* of wine down, my photos are edited, I have episodes of Supernatural playing in the background should I require immediate distraction, and I just need to provide you with insightful data on what I loved this month.

Shall we proceed?

WE SHALL.

Too Faced – Coral Fire
Too Faced – Coral Fire

HNNGGGGGG. Call this my lipstick of summer. (Really, call it whatever you want, I’ll just be over in the corner calling it pretty.) This is Too Faced‘s Coral Fire and it apparently fits into their “red” category of lipsticks. Uh… okay. On ME it’s (oh god, am I really saying this?) it’s a fiery coral. Derp.

It’s deeper than most corals, but I can’t get away from the fact that I do feel it’s actually *coral* in nature. I don’t think it’s red (like Too Faced does), but anyway. It’s beautiful. It’s a colour that just suits me – I’m always shocked by my appearance when I see myself in the mirror while wearing this. It’s slightly pink, slightly “red”, slightly coral, creamy, luminous and it just *works* on me. It’s the kind of shade that makes you want the entire collection because you figure that one colour must make the ENTIRE LINE be as beautiful on yourself as this one shade is. Not to mention the luscious sweet lemon scent of the product which is TO DIE FOR, just so we’re clear, and totally unique as far as I’m aware!

Even if you don’t like this shade, I encourage you to try something from Too Faced‘s La Creme line. All of the lip shades I have from this line are glorious on a level I didn’t even know existed. Plus the name appeals to me. Aside from the colour, we all need to acknowledge the fact that packaging and the naming conventions of products do inspire us to like products more. If this was called “pink-red”, I’d probably like “meh”. But it’s not. It’s called Coral Fire, and it makes me swoon.

Sleek – Sunrise palette
Sleek – Sunrise palette

Sleek does gorgeous makeup through and through. Their 12 pan eyeshadow palettes are my absolute favourite product by them. I used the Sunset palette extensively throughout an entire week this past month! (upcoming Challenge Week coming this following week with this very palette) and could not believe I had used this palette so little before then. The colours are phenomenally pigmented. The only downfall is a lack of matte colours. But let’s get real here – you’ve got mattes in your collection somewhere, and you can definitely break them out to use in conjunction with this palette.

Nicka K – Shimmer Eyeliner in Green
Nicka K – Shimmer Eyeliner in Green

Like Sarah, I’ve also been loving this liquid eyeliner this month. Nicka K‘s Shimmer Eyeliner in Green (uhhh *sorta* green) arrived in my June 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag.  I loved it at the time, but used it a few times and kind of disregarded it.

I’ll say the bad right off the bat: the brush is fucking weird. It’s not felt, foam or brush tip. It’s some weird plastic contraption that actually causes some patchiness when you apply it. The other downside is that it stains.

The upsides? IT STAINS, WHICH MEANS IT STAYS PUT FOREVER. The colour is incredible. The vibrancy and shimmer is completely unparalleled in anything I own. And it retails for $6 freaking dollars. My MUFE Aqualiner (read: is expensive) doesn’t even perform this well. I don’t mind staining when it means I can wear a product forever. And that colour… good lord. This is worth buying. And I want every shade.

I’m writing too many paragraphs, which generally means you’ve skipped over to the next picture and given up on me. But I love this, and it’s been my only eye makeup of choice when I’m visiting nearby friends or on a hot day when I really can’t be bothered to wear multiple eyeshadows.

Julep – Paris
Julep – Paris

Kalyn sent me this when I won a giveaway on her blog and I could kiss her for it. This is Julep‘s Paris nail polish. I don’t know much about Julep, but I know I love this. This is a chunky holographic glitter with a gold sheen. As I’ve mentioned before, I wear glitter on my toenails 24/7. When she sent me this, I had just run out of my current glitter polish and needed a replacement.  I’ve worn this on my toes for the entire month of July and I only have about a third of the bottle left. I *love* this stuff!

MAC – Sea Me, Hear Me
MAC – Sea Me, Hear Me

When I bought MAC‘s Sea Me, Hear Me blush I kind of made fun of it in my head. I mean it… to me, it was a fall colour being promoted in the summer. “The heck am I going to do with this thing throughout the summer? It’s too damn dark!” is what I told myself.

Lies. All lies.

I wore the pants out of this blush this month. Despite the swatch, it goes on my cheeks slightly more orange, which means I’ve kind of paired it with some odd combinations this month… but really, I don’t care. Because it’s an extra dimension blush (which has always meant “harder than normal” texture to me), I need to use a stiff duo-fiber brush to dig into the product. Buff it on, blend it out and pray for the best. It’s beautiful. To me it’s a more vibrant, showy Tarte Exposed. Which is perfect for the summer!

And really, I bought it because the packaging was pretty. (Show of hands, you know you did it too!)

Cat butt alert
Cat butt alert

And this was a blurry Nemo. Because you know he wasn’t going to miss out on on showing off some cat butt for this post!

And now, my favourite gif, because this entire WORK MONTH has felt like this. My boss sent it to me today and I was reminded of how much I love this gif. Grumpy cat, I <3 u4lyf.

What’s On My Face – Volume 19

Time for round 19 of makeup gunk I’ve splashed on my face!

201407_look2.1

I wore this one during Toronto’s Pride Week and really liked how this came out. You can really never go wrong with Makeup Geek‘s Utopia, such a beautiful blackened gold that seems to work with every colour imaginable.

  1. Inglot‘s Shine 132 (silver) all over the lid. Then apply Too Faced‘s Glitter Glue on top of the silver and tap on Makeup Geek‘s Utopia pigment on top. Utopia is also applied on the inner half of the lower lash line.
  2. Makeup Geek Creme Brulee through the top of the crease.

One of Nikki Tutorials’ recent recreations was a look that was inspired by Cheryl Cole. I took Nikki’s tutorial and tried to replicate it as much as possible which was, thankfully, relatively easy given that I had almost all of the exact same products she used. So here’s my take on her tutorial!

201407_look4.1

This look came about as I was doing my “Four or More: Eyes Edition” post and remembered just how much I love the sheen/duochromeness of the Color Tattoo in Waves of White.

201407_look4.2

  1. Maybelline Color Tattoo in Waves of White all over the lid.
  2. From Sleek‘s Acid palette, use the darker blue shade in the outer corner and through the crease.

201407_look5.1

Judging by what foundation I used, I think this look is from a month or more ago. I was going through a pink crease phase and this was one of the looks I came up with.

Challenge Week: Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette

While on vacation in the US back in March, I picked up Too Faced’Chocolate Bar – Trying to resist the chocolatey smelling palette was far beyond any kind of self control I personally had at the time! I decided to include it in a weekly challenge (use only this palette for the week), but it turned out to be a week I only wore makeup four out of the seven days! However, I came up with a few looks I quite liked. And, just like everyone else, I can’t get over the smell of this palette. I really wish they made all their palettes smell like this going forward!

20140618_look1.1

This is really just a regular every day eye look made really eyecatching by the red liner. I love how this one worked out and received a surprising amount of compliments on the liner despite how unconventional it was.

20140618_look1.2

Eyes

  • White Chocolate all over the lid and on the browbone.
  • Semi-Sweet in the crease.
  • Cherry Cordial in the outer corner.

Inglot Gel Liner in 79 to create the wing with Benefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Bronzer: Physicians Formula Bronzer Booster in Light/Medium
  • Blush: Illamasqua Tweak
  • Highlighter: MAC Soft and Gentle
  • Lips: MAC Strawberry Malt lipglass

20140618_look3.1

Cherry Cordial is one of my favourite colours in the palette and I just really love how it looks in the crease. It doesn’t seem to matter what shade you pair it with because it always works out!

20140618_look3.2

Eyes

  1. Amaretto on the lid.
  2. Cherry Cordial in the outer corner.
  3. Salted Caramel lightly at the top of the crease
  4. Champagne Truffle on the inner corner.

White Chocolate was used to highlight the brow and Triple Fudge was pushed into the lash line to act as a soft liner. On my lashes is  Benefit‘s They’re Real mascara.

Rest of the Face

  • Foundation: Covergirl CC Cream in 110 Classic Ivory and Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in Shade 51 Light Vanilla mixed together
  • Bronzer: Joe Fresh Sand Bronzer
  • Blush: Physicians Formula Happy Booster in Natural
  • Highlighter: MAC Soft and Gentle
  • Lips: I didn’t write it down! ARGH! It could be NYX‘s Fizzies.

20140618_look2.1

These two shades are really the only ones that veer outside of neutral in this palette. I can’t say I’m impressed with the pigmentation of either of them, but it certainly branches the palette out a little bit more.

20140618_look2.2

Eyes

  1. Strawberry Bon Bon all over the lid.
  2. Candied Violet in the crease.

White Chocolate to highlight the brow and Benefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Cheeks: Illamasqua Hussy
  • Nothing else!

20140618_look4.1

This is my usual “I don’t know what to wear” look that I usually reach for with my Urban Decay Naked palette. I wanted to see if I could re-create the look using the Chocolate Bar… and I *can*, it’s just a lot more shimmery than the one the Naked one gives off.

20140618_look4.2

Eyes

  1. Champagne Truffle all over the lid and on the browbone.
  2. Salted Caramel through the crease.
  3. Hazelnut in the outer corner.

Tarte‘s black gel liner for the wing and Benefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Blush: MAC Sea Me, Hear Me
  • Lips: Maybelline Vivid Rose

The Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette can be purchased from Sephora.ca for $59 CAD or TooFaced.com for $49 USD.

Thirty Days of Lips

When I came back from vacation in March (and bought that hoard of makeup), I realized I’d picked up something crazy like 26 lip products. So I dropped them all in a bucket and determined that I’d work my way through the whole lot of them. That didn’t end up exactly happening since I ended up using other products I loved as well, but I thought I’d record my progress in pictures as I went along. The result of that process is the following picture: A full month record of what I wore on my lips throughout April.thirtydaysoflips

What’s On My Face – Volume 17

When I first created this blog, I was really, really worried that I wouldn’t be able to generate enough makeup looks to sustain any kind of regular “makeup looks” posting schedule. Little did I realize just how many eye looks I attempt and even months later I’ve still got a huge backlog of eye looks for upcoming posts!

20140604_look1.1

Glitter and lashes. You really can’t go wrong. I think this came out really beautifully.

20140604_look1.2

Eyes

I first applied Makeup Geek‘s White Lies all over the lid as a base, then:

  1. Inglot Matte 334 in the outer corner and throughout the crease.
  2. Inglot Matte 325 in the outer corner to darken it up. Also used on the lower lash line in the outer corner.
  3. MAC‘s Transparent Teal glitter all over the lid. To make the glitter stick, I used Too Faced Glitter Glue as a base layer. I also applied the glitter on the lower lash line as well.

MAC Shroom to highlight the brow. Tarte‘s black gel liner to create the wing and Urban Decay‘s Black Velvet liner on the inner lower lash line rim. Benefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes and Ardell single lashes to add some volume to my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Foundation: Revlon Colorstay (Combination/Oily) in 200 Nude
  • Concealer: MAC Select Cover-up in NW20
  • Bronzer: Joe Fresh Sand Bronzer
  • Blush: Physicians Formula Happy Booster Blush in Natural
  • Highlighter: MAC Silver Dusk
  • Lips: NYX Butter Gloss in Vanilla Cream Pie

20140604_look4.1

This one came to me out of nowhere. I often use Sleek‘s Sunrise palette as my mirror of choice, so I often find myself staring at those colours. The blue in that palette is beautiful, but I never really knew how to incorporate it into a look with that palette. This came to me as a spur of the moment type thing and I think it turned out really well. It’s funny because people say not to wear blue eyeshadow if you have blue eyes because it’ll drown out the colour of your eyes… but I have to say I received so many compliments at work that this brought out my eye colour that I really have to disagree with the “norm” to not wear blue on blue eyes!

20140604_look4.2

Eyes

Using the Sleek Sunset palette:

  1.  From the bottom row, the second shade on the right, apply that all over the lid.
  2. Again from the bottom row, sweep the first colour from the left into the crease and blend out.
  3. MAC Blanc Type to highlight the brow.

On the lower lash line, use the bright blue from the Sleek Sunset palette, then smudge it out slightly with Makeup Geek‘s Creme BruleeBenefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Cheeks: MAC Petal Power
  • Bronzer: NYC Fire Island Tan
  • Lips: Too Faced Coral Fire

20140604_look2.1

This look’s genius comes from Sharon Farrell. Her Tequila Sunrise tutorial was not only unique, but utterly eye-catching. I definitely do not possess her skill, but I thought I’d give this look a shot because I loved her end result so much.

20140604_look2.2

Eyes

  1. Makeup Geek Creme Brulee very heavily through the crease.
  2. MAC Steamy on the inner two thirds of the lid.
  3. MAC Club on the outer third of the lid. Also applied all over the lower lash line.
  4. MAC Gorgeous Gold on the inner tearduct.

MAC Blanc Type to highlight the brow. Tarte‘s black gel liner to create the wing and Urban Decay‘s Black Velvet liner on the inner lower rim. Benefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Bronzer: Joe Fresh Sand Bronzer
  • Blush: Tarte Charisma
  • Lips: NYX Butter Lipstick in Fizzies

20140604_look5.1

I was rooting through my collection determined to use something I had touched in long time. So this look ended up utilizing a few of my older, limited edition products.

20140604_look5.2

Eyes

Using the MAC mineralize eyeshadow trio in Blue My Mind:

  1. The lightest shade on the inner third of the lid.
  2. The blue shimmery shade on the middle of the lid.
  3. The black on the outer corner.

MAC Shroom to highlight my brow, MAC fluidline in Midnight Blues to create the wing and Benefit They’re Real mascara.

Rest of the Face

  • Foundation: Boots No7 Instant Radiance foundation in Cool Vanilla
  • Blush: Tarte Charisma
  • Lips: Wet n Wild 903C with NYX‘s Butter Gloss in Tiramisu on top

20140604_look3.1

Ehhhhhhhhhhh. This one’s okayyyyyy…..

20140604_look3.2

Eyes

  1. Makeup Geek Simply Marlena and Mango Tango mixed together and blended into the crease. I’d say it’s a lot heavier on the pinker shade.
  2. Makeup Geek Vanilla Bean all over the lid.
  3. Makeup Geek Frappe and Goddess mixed together and applied to the outer third.

Vanilla Bean to highlight the brow and Benefit They’re Real mascara on my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Bronzer: Joe Fresh Sand Bronzer
  • Blush: Hourglass Diffused Heat
  • Lips: Rimmel Apocalips in Stellar
