Probably one of my most asked for Challenge Weeks has been for this Kat Von D Metal Matte palette! And it’s not hard to see why… this palette has gotten nothing but rave reviews as far as the eye can see!

The Metal Matte is an ENORMOUS (seriously – the damn thing is HUGE) mix of metal crush shadows mixed with a ton of matte shades. And unlike every other brand out there, KVD makes ONE palette, makes it in the USA and does it RIGHT.

I don’t normally do a review in these posts because I feel like they’re more geared towards the looks than my thoughts, but I will give you a brief rundown: I feel like the mattes are on par with the rest of KVD’s range, although slightly less powdery (which is good). The metal shades performed well overall, but I found Tinsel to be a touch grainy and some of the shades required a different type of brush compared to what I’m used to (flat versus fluffy, depending on the job you’re doing). Watt is hands down my favourite shade in this palette, followed closely by Flash. In short? You cannot go wrong with this palette – including the fact that it has two potential transition shades AND a white and a black!

My thoughts out of the way, on with the Metal Matte looks!

I wanted to opt for an icy blue/turquoise look and go ridiculously all out with the shimmer!

Eyes

1. Suede through the crease.
2. Tinsel on the inner third of the eye.
3. Ignite on the middle of the lid.
4. Watt on the outer half of the lid.
5. Bone on the brow bone

I replicated that same colour placement on my lower lash line, and created the wing with Inglot’s AMC Gel Liner in 77 (Black). I applied Urban Decay Perversion mascara to my top and bottom lashes.

I’m a sucker when it comes to light to dark colour gradients in the same colour family, so that’s what I did with this look!

Eyes

1. Fringe through the crease.
2. Twinkle on inner third of the lid.
3. Silk in the middle of the lid.
4. Ribbon on the outer half.
5. Bone on the brow bone

I created the wing with Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner in Trooper and coated my lashed with Urban Decay’s Perversion mascara.

This was the look I created as a video tutorial featuring this palette (you can watch that here, if you’d like). Since I’m usually so stuck on same-colour gradients, I figured I should try to mix up the colours a bit. The intention was to go straight from gold to blue, but I found I had to mix some green in the middle to get the shades to blend nicely. I also wanted to replicate EXACTLY the idea of Metal/Matte, so the top lid is completely metallized, whereas the bottom lid is all matte shades. I’m not sure it translates as well as the idea did in my head, but yeah… now you know!

On the lower lash line, I replicated the pattern and used Feather on the inner third, Moss in the middle and Velour on the outer third. I created the wing with Too Faced’s Sketch Marker in Black  and coated my lashes with Urban Decay’s Perversion mascara. I also have a pair of House of Lashes Bombshell falsies on.

Sooooo this is the look I like the most that I came up with out of this entire palette and I wish I had filmed it instead! Usually when I see a palette for the first time, I can envision a look right off the bat. BUT it tends to be a look I’ve already done before, so I try to steer away from that look because I feel like I’m repeating myself. Sadly, this usually means I create looks I’m not as in love with. I’m slowly learning to stick with my gut though and I’m so glad I decided to go ahead and create this look because I think it knocks the other ones out of the park! Same as above repeated on the lower lash line! I used NARS’ Unrestricted Eyeliner Stylo in Matte Black to create the wing, applied Urban Decay’s Perversion mascara to my lashes and popped on a pair of House of Lashes Bombshell falsies.

So I tried to do something different and used a yellow in my crease instead of a traditional brown or pink. Yeah NO – do not do that, especially when you’re going to be putting purple in the outer corner! EESH! It looked okayish in the end, but it was definitely sort of also looking like a bruise!

4. Stone to deepen up the outer corner.
5. Twinkle on the inner corner.
6. Bone on the brow bone.
