Fitness Friday: AfterShokz Trekz Titanium

AfterShokz Trekz Titanium

If you’re a runner who takes part in races, you’ll often see in the race rules that wearing earphones is either forbidden or not recommended because they want you to be able to hear the race officials in case of an emergency. People almost always disregard this “rule”, but what if there was a better option? One that could let you listen to your music AND keep you safe because you can hear the surrounding area?

AfterShokz Trekz Titanium
AfterShokz Trekz Titanium ($129.99 USD)

There IS an option! Trekz Titanium is a wireless headset that uses Bluetooth to connect to your listening device of choice. (In my case, I had to use my phone, because my incredibly old iPod Nano does not have Bluetooth capabilities.) It also has a built in microphone so you can actually take calls on your phone while out for a run (I get a few alerts regarding e-mails I have received when I use this!).

The way these work is that the headphones wrap around the back of your neck and over the tops of your ears. What looks like the “earpiece” is actually bone conducting transducers that sit on the backs of your cheekbones and conduct the sound via vibrations through your cheeks into your inner ear. Mind = blown.

The headphones sit solidly on my ears, although if you’re not used to them, you will notice the weight of them a little bit (they aren’t heavy though – don’t mistake me for saying that. It’s just a different sensation than what I’m used to with my earbuds). The pinching mechanism used to keep them attached to your head is not painful and I noticed no discomfort through a 5K run.

The headset has an on/off button located on one side as well as a port for charging (a full charge will let you listen for six hours) and buttons to turn the music up and down. Not pictured is the other side of the headset that has a single button that, depending on how it’s clicked, can either pause your music or skip a song, as well as a whole host of options related to your phone (i.e., receiving, dialing, etc.). I highly appreciate the fact that the buttons rely on a tactile response as opposed to a heat option, because when I’m running outside in the winter, the last thing I want to do is take off my gloves to push a button (like on my freaking iPod.  UGH.).

As a bonus, you do get a carrying case for the headset. This is beneficial because the headset is rather awkwardly shaped and there’s really no good way to carry it around without this case.

It also comes with some earplugs and some adjustment clips that can be used to help fit smaller heads.

So how did these FEEL? Well, my initial reaction was that they were really, really weird. I was so unused to hearing music without something crammed in my ears. It was kind of like the first time you heard music come from a discman or a walkman – maybe not something all that impressive today, but I remember being quite young and stunned by hearing music on a walkman for the first time ever. It’s a little jawdropping! For people who find earbuds are especially uncomfortable to wear, this may be a really good option for you.

It’s worth noting that these are not especially private headphones. If you’re running beside someone who doesn’t have loud music playing, they will be able to hear your music.  It’s not a problem really, especially not in an outdoor race, but it’s not something I would personally feel comfortable wearing to the gym since I don’t want my music to interfere with other people.

As far as the sound quality goes, I’m a very average music listener with very little demands. I found the sound quality to be completely on parr with my regular headphones and noticed no significant drop in quality (I am not a musician and don’t tend to notice many differences in music across multiple headphones/speakers/etc.). The quality is good enough that I can hear my music while I’m running and that’s all I really want!

My biggest complaint about the Trekz Titanium is that the audio doesn’t go to a level that I consider loud enough for *me*. It hits max sound level right around what I would consider “medium volume”. That being said, it’s loud enough to cover the sound of my breathing (something that is really, REALLY important to me, I hate listening to myself breathing while running), so many users may find the volume perfectly loud enough.

So what do you think? Is this something you would use? Are you intrigued by the idea of music that conducts through your cheekbones and not through your ear canal??

Trekz Titanium headphones by AfterShokz can be purchased on their web site for $129.99 USD.

Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation (Review + Swatches)

Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation in shades 10 Porcelain Ivory and 15 Ivory

New in the foundation department by Maybelline is their Dream Velvet formula and it promises:

  • Hydrated skin. Matte finish. Flawless face.
  • Turning heads, bringing your A-game, the #nofilter selfie.
  • Putting your best face forward.

The Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation comes in 12 shades ranging from 05 Warm Porcelain to 95 Coconut – although the shades definitely skew more to the paler side of things. You get the usual fluid ounce of product in a squeeze tube that comes with a nozzle tip (and there’s even a little foil seal on it when you first purchase it so you know it’s not been tampered with). The packaging is slim, compact and sleek. The tube is easy to squeeze and it’s easy to get product out of this tube since the plastic is soft and pliable (something I highly appreciate). The product itself is like a thick, whipped mousse but it spreads and blends easily on the face.

The one thing that really set me back in trying this foundation though was the colours. If you take a look at the swatches above, you’ll notice that 15 Ivory is really quite dark and is more attuned to my skin tone in the summer. However, even the shade 10 Porcelain Ivory is still quite dark and VERY warm compared to my skin tone. In fact, it looks downright peachy. I put off trying this foundation for a week because I was scared it would not match my face and I’d be left looking like a fool at work.

I was TOTALLY wrong:

Comparison between no foundation and shade 10 Porcelain Ivory

That’s how 10 Porcelain Ivory looks on my skin! It’s a FLAWLESS match in my book *and* it even matches my neck! I have no idea what the heck is in this foundation to cause it to colour match like that, but the shade is bang on and I couldn’t be happier. Given how odd the original swatch looked on the underside of my arm… I’m kind of astounded. I don’t know how you did it Maybelline – but you did, and it’s awesome!

Final Thoughts

I’m in LOVE with this new Dream Velvet foundation! Aside from my initial scare with the colour matching, this product has seriously zero faults. (For reference, my skin is fairly dry right now.) I get a full day’s wear out of it (around 10 hours). I have no creasing or sinking into fine lines (usually an issue on my forehead because I raise my eyebrows a lot). It feels soft and velvety to the touch. It doesn’t make my face itchy. It doesn’t go patchy or peel anywhere. The coverage is truly flawless and it was a breeze applying it to my face since it requires very little blending to get it to sink in (I use a Real Techniques sponge). I love the squeeze tube and the compact size. In short, I cannot believe how amazing this foundation is! I really don’t have any faults for how this foundation wore on my skin or looked. /bows down before Maybelline

The Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation can be purchased for ~$16.99 CAD in stores, or at Ulta.com for $10.99 USD.

What I Bought This Month – February 2016 Haul

Monthly haul time! Enjoy. 🙂

Inglot - Duraline ($18 CAD)
Inglot – Duraline ($18 CAD)

Let’s start off with the only item I actually BOUGHT this month! Inglot‘s Duraline was a must have for me since my Inglot red gel liner turned gloppy on me. Duraline will soften up gel liners that have gone a little bit stale (or any other cream product). I’ve put off buying it for a while now, but when my red gel liner died, I knew it was time to invest. 🙂

So, that may have been the only item I bought this month, but I am very, very lucky to have a ton of beauty blogging friend in Toronto and we do swaps every few months. It gives me a chance to get rid of product that don’t work for me, and pick up ones that could potentially be love at first sight. So here’s the goodies I got from a swap:

Inglot - empty palettes
Inglot – empty palettes

I realize these are empty Inglot palettes, but I am SO excited for that! I love Inglot‘s system of palettes, and I think the packaging is beautiful, but it annoys me to buy packaging every time I go to buy shadows. Now I’ve got three empty palettes I can fill with beautiful colours!

I love... Coconut & Cream
I love… Coconut & Cream

I do not need shower gel. At all. And yet, I always grab for it when I see it at a swap. Why? Maybe because I always considered shower gel as so unnecessarily expensive in stores that I really don’t want to pay for it again any time soon. I love shower gel, and this smells wonderful, but it’s gone to the back of my “to use” pile of shower gels. I’m sure I’ll get to it… at some point. lol

Josie Maran - Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil in Limitless Pink
Josie Maran – Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil in Limitless Pink

One of my favourite YouTubers (StrwberrySweet – mostly does Project Pans) panned one of these Josie Maran Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil relatively recently, and I wanted to see what they were all about. My initial reaction is that I’m not super keen on the scent of them, but that it wore well and looked good!

Boscia - Intensifying Moisture Pack
Boscia – Intensifying Moisture Pack

This Boscia Intensifying Moisture Pack + is sitting in my medicine cabinet and while I’m writing this up I realize I haven’t even got a clue as to whether this is a facial cleanser or a moisturizer. Heh.

Benefit Air Patrol
Benefit Air Patrol

I’ve harped on about my problems with eyeshadow primers before so I won’t bore you with the details other than to say I love trying new ones. Benefit‘s Air Patrol is adorable looking and I’m excited to see how this one holds up!

Aveenon Fresh Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer
Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer

I love Aveeno‘s skincare products and I’ve been using them for the last… 14 years. Eek. Anyway, I haven’t tried out their Fresh Essentials range so I’m looking forward to using this one.

Vitabath - Sweet Pink Peppermint
Vitabath – Sweet Pink Peppermint

More shower gel! I got sucked in by the scent of Vitabath‘s Sweet Pink Peppermint – it’s more of a Christmasy scent, so I’ll probably bust it out in November.

The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter
The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter

MWAHAHAHAH!!!!! The Body Shop‘s Satsuma scent has been one of my favourite scents throughout my entire life and yet… my husband doesn’t like the scent of it. I haven’t repurchased it since I used my last big tub up of the body butter… but now I have another one. 😀

NYC Liquid Liner
NYC Liquid Liner

NYC‘s Liquid Liner has been touted as one of the best matte black liquid liners at the drugstore and I hadn’t gotten around to picking it up! Initial reaction: DEFINITELY matte, DEFINITELY black… but I’m not in love with the way the tip of the brush is cut. Hmmm… maybe I’ll just cut it myself.

Misslyn nail polish in 756
Misslyn nail polish in 756

No one wanted this Misslyn nail polish in 756… which was great for me since I wear this kind of silver disco polish on my toenails 24/7 so picked this one up since I’ve never tried a Misslyn polish before.

B Kamins Laboratories
B Kamins Laboratories

I know NOTHING about this B Kamins brand… but the body lotion says “Maple” on it. It, however, smells nothing like maple, so I was totally duped. 😐

BH Cosmetics - Galaxy Chic
BH Cosmetics – Galaxy Chic

BH Cosmetics - Galaxy Chic
BH Cosmetics – Galaxy Chic

I couldn’t believe someone brought this to the swap. I had lusted over this Galaxy Chic palette years ago when BH Cosmetics released it, but never bought it because like everything else in the makeup world… you become so inundated with products you end up buying some, and not others. The colours, the marbling, the names of the colours… everything about this palette makes me so, SO happy. I’ve used it twice now and love the shadows. Not a matte in sight though, so it’s not a standalone palette.

Maybelline Lash Sensational
Maybelline Lash Sensational

A new mascara for me to try out: The Maybelline Lash Sensational. I’ve still got a lot of mascara left in my currently opened tubes, so it’ll be a while before I bust into this one.

Etude House Vivid Popstick
Etude House Vivid Popstick

I’m not too familiar with Etude House‘s makeup, so I was excited to see a few items by them. This is essentially one of those matte lipstick crayons. I like it, but I don’t love it.

Etude House - Color Lipsfit
Etude House – Color Lipsfit

Not tried this one yet… this is by Etude House as well and I think it’s just for lips.. but may be for cheeks as well. It’s still sitting in my “To Use” pile!

Coloured Raine - Electric Raine
Coloured Raine – Electric Raine

Oh wow. Okay… I had heard about Coloured Rained via NikkieTutorials on YouTube, but never bought any. BUT THIS IS AMAZING! IT’s nowhere near as drying as the Colour Pop liquid lipsticks – instead this one is so much more comfortable on me lips. I may need more…

Clip - Lipnicure in Trouble Peach
Clip – Lipnicure in Trouble Peach

Unfortunately, Clio‘s Lipnicure was a straight “into the garbage” item. It applied patchily and then just really poorly. To the point where I removed it mid-day at work and it was a disaster to remove. I threw it straight into the trash. 🙁

Too Faced La Creme in Loganberry
Too Faced La Creme in Loganberry

This one astonished me. Too Faced‘s Loganberry La Creme lipstick was discontinued about a year ago and I was never able to get my hands on it. Imagine my surprise that someone would want to get rid of it! YESSSS!

THEFACESHOP - Face Mask Aloe
THEFACESHOP – Face Mask Aloe

A face mask via THEFACESHOP. This’ll be my first time using anything by THEFACESHOP.

Annabelle Brow-To-Go
Annabelle Brow-To-Go

A brow kit from Annabelle that has turned out to be wayyy too dark for me, but it has worked when I need to darken up my eyebrows to look more like someone else (see my The 100 Wanheda/Clarke tutorial).

Annabelle Brow Show
Annabelle Brow Show

Another Annabelle brow product! Brow Show is light enough for me so this has actually been working out and it’s really easy to use. Not enjoying the huge size of the pencil, but the product is nice!

And we’re done! I’m doing pretty well conserving my money for IMATS New York, and these swaps are definitely helping me to keep products rotating in and out of my collection1
