Although I’ve been a long-time user (and staunch advocate for) the NeutrogenaHydrating makeup removing wipes, I’ve not really delved much into the rest of their skincare. That changed this past month while I was trying out the NeutrogenaHydro Boost Gel Cream!
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream
The Hydro Boost Gel Cream is formulated for extra-dry skin, and is fragrance-free. (Although I do detect a subtle scent personally – it was quite nice!). It is a “lightweight gel-cream that instantly quenches and continuously hydrates skin. Formulated with hyaluronic acid, it boosts hydration and locks it in so skin stays hydrated, smooth and supple day after day. Applies effortlessly, absorbing quickly into skin without leaving behind an oily or greasy feel.”
And you know what? For once, all of the claims made by a company are totally freaking accurate and I actually experienced them myself! This isn’t a super thick formula, which means I *can* wear it after I’ve washed my face in the morning and my makeup won’t be slip-sliding everywhere afterwards. It sinks in within a few minutes and it doesn’t leave me with that tight skin feeling that a lot of gel formulas do. You know the one… where your skin feels like it might crack as the gel is settling in? I can’t be the only one that feels this…
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream
One thing that needs to be pointed out so that you don’t make the same mistake I did… but this formula of gel cream is really, REALLY slippery. If you open the jar haphazardly when you’re in a rush, you’ll risk sloshing it absolutely everywhere (something I have totally done). It’s not like most gel creams I’ve tried that stay put in the tub – this one moves around almost like it has the consistency of wet, melting snow.
Final Thoughts
The texture and feel of the NeutrogenaHydro Boost Gel Cream moisturizer has me completely sold. I love how it sinks into my skin quickly and doesn’t leave me with a greasy mess on my face. The packaging lover in me loves the blue tub as well as the blue-tinted product inside. Suffice to say… I love it!
A few weeks ago, I was invited to try out Spokehaüs – Toronto’s newest spinning location. Spokehaüs (I love the word play!) is located at 70 Dan Leckie Way in in Cityplace, Toronto, which is not the most convenient location for me to get to from my office (King/Bay), but it was a really nice 30 minutes walk!
Spokehaüs provides you with shoes that fit their bikes
I’ll start this off by saying that I’ve never done spinning of any kind and I can barely remember the last time I was even on a bicycle. So this whole fitness thing is very, very new to me. When I arrived at Spokehaüs they had me sign a waiver and had me fitted for a pair of shoes (the shoes fit neither large nor small and were consistent with normal running shoe sizing, although I would say they were slightly narrower than most running shoes. For reference, I wear a running shoe size 7, and that’s what I was in the spinning shoes). The shoes are necessary because you end up clipping into your stationary bike. You can bring your own, but I believe the clips have to match their particular bike system.
Thankfully my friend (and beauty blogger!) Shawna was there to try out spinning with me!
Thankfully, I wasn’t doing this alone! My friend Shawna of Spill the Beauty was more than willing to try out Spokehaüs with me. Hooray for strength in numbers!
The first thing I noticed was that the layout of the studio was not my favourite. Class sizes are about 30 people or so and the bathroom/changing area gets very, very cramped with even only six people in there. (Plus the door pulls into the room, basically hitting any and everyone in the immediate vicinity.) However, there are handy lockers that you can program with your own code free of charge (and easy to program too!). We were in the early class (5:30) so we were able to change in peace, but once our class let out we were suddenly bombarded with everyone for the 6:30 class waiting to get in and the change room was totally packed.
Spokehaüs spinning room
Anyway, on to the spinning itself! We were assigned bikes and lead into a dark room. A towel and our name tag was on our assigned bikes (super nice touch!). We were shown how to clip our shoes into our bicycles and asked what kind of weights we wanted to use. Not knowing how much we’d be doing with the weights (or even WHAT we would be doing with them), I opted for 3 pounders (this was a good option as there was a small weights segment but it was predominantly shoulder work, so don’t go crazy with the weights). The room was dark and lit by candles on the floor surrounding the center area where our instructor would be.
This was the BEFORE shot…
Once it was time to get started, the doors behind us were closed and the lights were totally turned off (there may have been a single dim spotlight on the instructor, but I can’t quite remember). I really, really enjoyed this aspect because it was enough light to see the instructor, but if you’re someone who is self conscious about how you look or how you feel about exercise, this will alleviate a lot of your anxieties.
The class was incredibly well lead. I can’t remember our instructor’s name, but she was motivating and effective. Even getting off her bike at times to jump around the room and encourage us. Especially helpful when you felt like you were struggling a little bit with the moves! And I have to say… I was totally drenched even halfway through the spin class. I have never felt sweat pouring off my entire body like I did during this workout. I wasn’t necessarily out of breath (I had a little bit of trouble hearing when to turn up the resistance), but I was just totally soaked. We’re talking sweat trickling down your lower back and butt crack, pouring off your face in buckets… to the point where I swear I actually felt my earlobes dripping as well. I run a significant amount of distances every month, but I have never sweat like this before in my entire life. Not even on a run in 35C heat, or at a soccer game in (no, I’m not joking) 49C with humidex.
…and this is the after shot!
You can’t really tell from these terrible phone photos I took (sorry, I forgot my camera at home!), but my hair was soaked through. To the point where my soggy ponytail was actually whipping me during the workout! I was sooo drenched!
You might ask if this is something I’d repeat doing, and for me, the answer is that it’s not quite my cup of tea (there’s something about cycling that doesn’t really get me going, you know?), but I can assure you that I was motivated to work hard throughout my Spokehaüs session. I loved the instructor, I loved the atmosphere (although it could’ve done with a little air conditioning in that room!) and I think it’s a fantastic workout. If you love spinning, I’d encourage you to check out Spokehaüs!
If you’ve tried spinning, tell me what you’ve loved or not loved about it. I know some people are head over heels for it while others feel very differently – but there’s no denying that it’s a hell of a workout!
Several of us Canadian Beauty Bloggers are heading to New York City this weekend to attend IMATS New York! If you want to follow our shenanigans, keep an eye out for the #CBBxNYC hashtag on Twitter and Instagram!
In the meantime, here’s the makeup I’m bringing with me:
Clinique has got a good thing going on with their gorgeously embossed powder “Pop” line! When the blushes came out a few years ago, everyone was in total awe. I mean, how could you not fall in love with the beautiful clear acrylic containers alongside the beautifully embossed daisy imprint? I mean, the whole thing is basically a makeup lover’s dream!
Clinique Lid Pops
More recently, they’ve extended that line up with their Lid Pop eyeshadows (and really, who didn’t see that one coming??). These eyeshadows contain as absolutely astounding 6 grams (well, almost! They have 5.95 grams each.) of product. When you compare them to a normal eyeshadow pan which usually contains about 1.3-1.5g, you realize just how much product you’re actually getting in one of these!
Clinique Lid Pops
Clinique describes these eyeshadows as “a modern wash of silky, long-wearing eye shadow”. I do feel they pack more colour punch than a “sheer wash”, but there is some variety in intensity between all four shades I tried.
Clinique Lid Pop in Willow Pop
Easily the most unique shade out of the whole bunch, Willow Pop, is a gorgeous burnt gold with some kind of green shading in there. I really don’t think I have any other colour like it in my entire makeup collection!
Clinique Lid Pop in Cream Pop
Although this is called Cream Pop, there is a soft hint of orange to the shadow. Maybe a bit champagne?
Clinique Lid Pop in Petal Pop
Petal Pop is the soft pink of the lot. It’s predominantly a baby pink, but it does have soft gold reflects in it.
Clinique Lid Pop in Grape Pop
The last shade I have is Grape Pop, a beautiful purple that fits the “colourful, but not too colourful” eyeshadow look that most people are looking for!
Wearing Willow and Cream
In the shot above, I’m wearing Willow Pop all over the lid with Cream Pop in the inner corner. Willow Pop is seriously such a unique shade. I love how it looks green, gold and bronze on my lid! Cream Pop was a lovely accent colour to the whole look and I applied it to the inner corner of my eye.
Wearing Petal and Grape
Above, I’m wearing Petal Pop all over the lid with Grape Pop through the outer corner and crease. I was able to build Grape Pop up, but it wasn’t as dark as I expected it to be right off the bat.
Final Thoughts
The CliniqueLid Pops breathe a breath of fresh air into Clinique‘s lineup of eyeshadows. They’re the perfect complement to the Cheek Pops and I’m so glad they decided to keep going with the “Pop” idea. The eyeshadows are soft to the touch and easy to work with, although some may need more building up than others. You will find that the daisy pattern will start to wear off pretty quickly once you start dipping into the pans regularly. Of the four I tried, Willow Pop was easily my favourite just because it’s so unlike anything else I’ve ever owned.
Although the eyeshadow price tag is a bit up there in price point, pound for pound, these are infinitely cheaper just because you’re getting so much product in each compact. (This is less important for makeup obsessors since we’re unlikely to go through a full eyeshadow any time soon, but rather this is a great point of interest for people who don’t tend to wear a ton of eyeshadow and instead stick to the basics – this eyeshadow, if used daily, will last you an INCREDIBLY long time!). My recommendation? Get a few shades you know you’ll love!
