Real Techniques – What’s New?!

New Real Techniques sets!

While I’m not really a brush person when it comes to makeup, there’s one thing I can say for sure, and it’s that I am a REAL TECHNIQUES person. Every time they have a new launch, or extension to their range, I AM THERE. And you know why? It’s because the quality is always consistent and I have yet to encounter a brush I don’t love. And? Their price tags are completely reasonable!

Real Techniques has a number of new launches lately that I wanted to cover – including some limited edition sets you may want to snag before they’re gone – so let’s hop right in.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge 4-pack and mini Expert Face Brush
Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge 4-pack and mini Expert Face Brush

The number one most exciting launch for me is that they’re now selling the Miracle Complexion Sponges in a 4-pack. A chance to save some money on my number one used foundation sponge? Hell yes I’m into it! The Miracle Complexion Sponge is the *only* product I use to apply my foundation because it leaves me streak-free and looking airbrushed. The porosity of the sponge is perfect – it’s dense enough that it doesn’t soak up all of my foundation, but it’s also soft enough so that I can spread the foundation around evenly.

For those who like a traditional brush to apply their foundation, the Expert Face Brush is a good alternative to my beloved sponge. (If I’m out of sponges, I’m using this brush!) Just in time for the holidays, Real Techniques has launched a mini version that’s perfect as a stocking stuffer. While the size of the overall brush is smaller than your full size one, rest assured that the brush head is the same size – you’re really only getting a smaller handle.

Real Techniques Color Correcting Essentials Set - limited edition
Real Techniques Color Correcting Essentials Set – limited edition

Moving on to the limited edition sets, I’ve got two that are out for the holidays that fill me with utter joy. The set pictured above is their Color Correcting Essentials Set. The idea behind it is that you can use the brushes and mini sponges to help colour correct areas of your face with the appropriately coloured sponge and brush. Personally, I get the point behind the colours, but my main reason for loving this set is that the brushes are IDENTICAL to the deluxe crease brush! What a great way to pick up four extra crease brushes (and all with lovely coloured handles). I had thought that the price of this package would be a bit too pricey considering it’s four brushes and four sponges, but it retails for about $17.99 CAD/$19.99 USD which is a phenomenal price tag! I’ll likely only end up using the sponges for concealer every once in a blue moon, so for me this set was allll about those brushes!

Real Techniques Color and Contour Set - limited edition
Real Techniques Color and Contour Set – limited edition

ANOTHER exciting one – the Color and Contour Set! Number one, look at that freaking colour gradient on the handles! From copper orange to hot pink to purple? YESSSSS! And number two? This set has my beloved Multitask Brush which is the only brush I ever use to apply my bronzer. That brush is currently only available in another set (the Technique Essentials Kit) which I could repurchase so I have more than one brush, but it’s got a bunch of other brushes in there that I don’t necessarily need. So I was extremely happy to discover that this set has it in there!

This set also comes with the Multitask Cheek Brush (great for blush or highlighter), lip blur brush (an interesting one to me – I often see Sam of Pixiwoo – creator of this line – obliterating harsh lip lines since she doesn’t like the way it looks – so I can try that with this one), lip brush (great for lips, OR great for applying glitter to my lid!), miracle sculpting sponge (totally new to me) and a mirror. This set is a bit more pricey than the last one at $34.99 CAD/$24.99 USD, but you’re getting a lot of really good brushes in beautiful packaging so it’s well worth that price tag. Heck, that Multitask Brush is well worth the $35 alone!

Real Techniques is available at select Pharmasave, London Drugs, Pharma Choice, IDA Guardian, Value Drug Mart, Jean Coutu, Unipix and Familiprix stores in Canada. Looking to purchase online? Check out farleyco.ca for all your Real Techniques needs!

What I Bought This Month – March 2017 Haul

My haul is a little bit early this month for two reasons:

  1. I don’t anticipate myself buying anything more in the month of March (and even if I do, I’ll just hold it over till April).
  2. I didn’t have a review ready for today, so I thought I’d slot this in early!

Too Faced Peanut Butter & Honey

The one thing I was the most excited for was definitely the brand new limited edition Too Faced Peanut Butter and Honey palette. I have fallen deeply in love with its predecessor, the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette, and I was sooo anxious to get my hands on this one!

Too Faced Peanut Butter and Honey
Too Faced Peanut Butter and Honey (free – gift)

It’s an Ulta exclusive, so my wonderful friend Sara in Baltimore picked it up for me as a gift and shipped it up here! Sadly… the quality is nowhere near what the PB&J palette was and although I’ve only used it twice now, I’ve been very sad with how it performed. šŸ™ Ah well, you can’t love them all!

Cupcake Bath Fizzy - Birthday Cake (free - gift)
Cupcake Bath Fizzy – Birthday Cake (free – gift)

Alongside the PB & Honey palette, Sara sent along a few more gift items (we exchange Christmas gifts) and this adorable cupcake bath fizzy was one of them. I’ve always been intrigued by these kind of cake looking bath bombs, but haven’t ever used one yet!

Philosophy - The Land of Sweets (free - gift)
Philosophy – The Land of Sweets (free – gift)

And the last item Sara put in my gift was this trio of Philosophy shower gels. I’ve mentioned before that I definitely do not need anymore shower gels in my life but I had told her how much I loved the holiday Philosophy ones so she grabbed me up a sweet set! I know I’ve used the Candy Cane one before, but I’m excited to try the other two scents since they’re completely new to me!

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponges (~$8.99 USD)
Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponges (~$8.99 USD)

Since there were a few sales on at Ulta, Sara offered to grab me some items I was after. I think the Real Techniques duo pack of the sponges was around $9, but I’m not entirely sure since I paid her about four months ago for it. I always have a stockpile of these becuse they are the BEST!

Too Faced Merry Macarons ($39 USD)
Too Faced Merry Macarons ($39 USD)

Another thing I snapped up (via Sara) when they went on sale for the holiday season was the Too Faced Merry Macarons set (again, another Ulta exclusive item!).

Too Faced Merry Macarons ($39 USD)
Too Faced Merry Macarons ($39 USD)

As we’re all aware now, I’ve become a rather rabid Too Faced fan so I kind of feel like I need to own every single palette they put out. (I acknowledge that this is not only an expensive habit, but also kind of ridiculous.) It’s kind of pointless to talk about this item at this point since the holiday season is long gone, but I did buy it and just got it, so it’s worth mentioning!

And that’s it for the month! Looking back, I actually didn’t spent ANYTHING this past month – these items were all either gift products or something I paid for back in December! That’s kind of impressive actually…

What I Bought This Month – October 2015 Haul

There’s some exciting things in this haul! I got a bunch of stuff from overseas and that’s always enough to make me start squealing!

Neutrogena Healthy Skin CC Cream in Fair to Light (free)
Neutrogena Healthy Skin CC Cream in Fair to Light (free)

This Neutrogena CC Cream was such a surprise to me – it was in my Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon goodie bag! At first I thought it was just sunscreen, but nope – it’s definitely a tinted cc cream. SO COOL! I’m excited to try this one out.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($7.99 CAD)
Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($7.99 CAD)

Time for my yearly repurchase of the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge! I’ve started picking them up whenever IMATS happens, but they were only taking cash at the Farley Co and I hadn’t brought any this year. So anyway, I picked this one up at FTB BeautyĀ and I’ve already started using it. As a note, if you take care of your sponges, they do last a really long time. There was nothing inherently wrong with my old Complexion Sponge as I clean it frequently enough, but after a full year of use, I just wanted a fresh one.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation - 52 Vanilla (Ā£10.99)
Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation – 52 Vanilla (Ā£10.99)

The next few items are via Natalie of Ivory Avenue! She was in England for a little while and she managed to snag me every single item on my wishlist. What a champ!

So the first item of my list was the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation in shade 52 Vanilla. I LOVE THIS STUFF. I ran through an entire bottle this year and when I finished it I was so so sad. This stuff is freaking magic on the skin (full review over here) and I am so happy to have it back in my collection. I still have a few other foundations I want to finish before I get to use this one but YES – SO HAPPY! Also, the reason I asked her to pick it up for me in the UK is because even with our Canadian dollar being pretty shitty right now, it’s still cheaper to buy it in the UK than it is to get it in Canada. How frustrating is that??

Bourjois Delice de Poudre (Ā£7.99)
Bourjois Delice de Poudre (Ā£7.99)

The other item I wanted to try was the Bourjois Delice de Poudre. I’m a bronzer fiend so every time I see something new or unique, I want it. Not that this powder is especially new on the market, but since I hadn’t picked it up before, it’s new to me! The powder is supposed to smell like cocoa or chocolate, but honestly? I smell coconut. Lots and lots of coconut. It also comes with a whopping 14g of product (a bronzer normally has 9-10g) and looks like chocolate. Adorable.

Soap & Glory - Glow All Out (Ā£11)
Soap & Glory – Glow All Out (Ā£11)

Soap & Glory‘s Glow All Out is kind of weird to me. When you open the compact you’ll notice the powder is full on PINK. So I was a liiiitle bit skeptical this would work as a highlighter and not a blush. As it turns out, the pigmentation of the actual colour is fairly weak (which is good!) and it instead packs a bunch of shine. It’s pretty, but more of a subtle highlight.

Soap & Glory - Solar Powder (Ā£11)
Soap & Glory – Solar Powder (Ā£11)

Annnnd another bronzer. Soap & Glory‘s Solar Powder bronzer has a dark side and a light, but really… I’m just going to end up swirling my brush through both of them.

Soap & Glory - Sexy Motherpucker in Nudist (free)
Soap & Glory – Sexy Motherpucker in Nudist (free)

I had asked Natalie to find me Soap & Glory‘s Sexy Motherpucker in Nudist since I loved my Raplumzel so much. She wasn’t able to, but she gave me HERS instead! I wasn’t expecting that at all and yet I’m so pleased because this colour is stunning on me. It’s a gorgeous translucent nude that adds just a little bit of colours but a whole lot of shine. Plus the scent is to die for. By the way, I don’t know if these are discontinued now, but they’re no longer on Soap & Glory’s UK site and Natalie was saying they were sold out almost everywhere. :s

No7 Foundations: Ā£18.75 for both (buy one, get one 50% off!)
No7 Foundations: Ā£18.75 for both (buy one, get one 50% off!)

If you made me pick a favourite foundation I’d be tempted to say the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum…. but this is sliiightly better since it provides a touch more coverage. Boots No7 Instant Radiance foundation is freaking BOMB and you can’t find it in Canada anywhere or at Target in the US (they don’t have the Instant Radiance line). This is the foundation that I always notice makes my skin flawless in photos. I ended up getting Cool Vanilla and Warm Ivory because sometimes I feel Cool Vanilla is too pink. I’m so, SO happy to have these back in my arsenal!

Wet n Wild Color Icon trio in Sunset Junction (free)
Wet n Wild Color Icon trio in Sunset Junction (free)

And lastly, a cast off from another blogger’s collection: Wet n Wild‘s Sunset Junction. Not sure what I think about it yet, but hey, I love trying new things.

That’s it for this month! Have you picked up anything exciting recently?

Review: Real Techniques Sculpting Brush

201505_realtechniques_sculptingbrush1

Oh boy. Okay soā€¦ I donā€™t contour my face. I never have, simply because Iā€™ve seen a lot of bad contours in my day and I *donā€™t* want to be the woman on the street with terrible unblended streaks on her face. So when I was sent the Real Techniques Sculpting Brush to try out, needless to sayā€¦ I was slightly intimidated.

HOWEVER! I spend sooo many hours of my day watching makeup video after makeup video on YouTube that I feel like Iā€™m armed with enough information to give this contouring business a try.

Real Techniques Sculpting Brush
Real Techniques Sculpting Brush

Where do we start? Well, a brush is as good as any. The relatively newly released Sculpting Brush from Real TechniquesĀ has the basic shape to get you off on the right foot.

Real Techniques Sculpting Brush

Itā€™s a fat, dense brush, but itā€™s pinched neatly so it can get into the crevices of your cheekbones. Itā€™s not so stiff that itā€™ll give you grief while blending, but itā€™s not so floppy that you canā€™t get any definition. In my eyes, this makes this brush perfectĀ for newbies like myself.

Essentially, the idea behind contouring is to make your face look more gaunt. It helps to slim out our features, pop out our cheekbones and recede anything that we donā€™t want to draw attention to on our faces. The best way to do this is to use products (powders, creams, etc.) that have a natural grey-cast to them. Ideally, you should be contouring with a product that is darker than your own skin; one that can cause the effect of a natural shadow. Shadows arenā€™t orange or brown in colour, nor do they sparkle, which is why bronzers are not recommended for contouring. Thatā€™s not to say they canā€™t be used, but orange and glitterĀ definitely donā€™t scream ā€œshadowā€, do they?

Contouring guidelines

So hereā€™s what I did: I took Makeup Geekā€˜s Barcelona Beach eyeshadow on my Real Techniques Sculpting Brush and drew a line along the areas I wanted to recede. This included my jaw line, the hollow (not that I have much of one) UNDER my cheekbone and, because I forgot what I was doing, the sides of my forehead (an area I normally bronze. Oops!).

Using the lines as a guide, I then blended upwards and downwards to soften theĀ streakĀ I had created. This is highly necessary, otherwise you end up looking likeĀ a badly done up drag queen.

Contouring completed!

And hereā€™s how it came out. Seeing myself with contouring for the first time is very weird. My first reaction is that I feel like I overdid it, or that it wasnā€™t blended in enough. As I look at the pictures more over time, I get used to looking at my face like that and it seems less stark than I had originally thought it was.

With and without contouring
With and without contouring

On a side-by-side comparison, I can see how much it chiseled out my jaw bone and created a definite recession underneath my cheekbone. Iā€™m not a huge fan of the forehead business, but I can live with it. Amazingly, I donā€™t think it makes me look dirty either, which is something I half expected to see.

I donā€™t see myself contouring my face on a regular basis as I just donā€™t feel itā€™s a step that I need (or want to do!) on a daily basis. I can see how much of an impact it can make though! Iā€™m really happy that theĀ Real TechniquesĀ Sculpting BrushĀ made this a relatively simple job to do. And I mean that, I donā€™t think contouring my face took more than 3-5 minutes, which is pretty good for a total rookie.

So how do you guys contour? Or do you not bother with it?
