What’s In My Makeup Bag At Work

I’m not traditionally one for a makeup bag – I don’t carry a purse and therefore if something comes with me, it has to fit in my pockets. At the office, I used to just leave makeup bits and pieces in my desk drawers…. but, about a month ago, my office moved into what is called an active work environment, which means we no longer have our own desks. It’s a fluid workspace – you pick and choose what desk you’re going to work from depending on the hour, the meeting, or the work you’re going to be doing for the day. I’m still adapting to it (and after 15 years of having my own desk, it’s very discombobulating!), but one thing I knew I needed to figure out was how to carry my laptop around with me (I’ve got a cute, chic backpack I use for the office now) AND what I was going to do with the makeup I normally kept in my desk drawer.

I don’t usually need much makeup throughout my workday – I usually bring the lip colour I’m going to be wearing in to work with me and bring it back home that night and that’s it. However, there have been instances over the years where something goes wrong and my mascara flakes off, my eyeliner or brows rubs off, or a patch of foundation disappears around my mouth when I’m having my lunch, and that has necessitated having some backup makeup at the office in case of emergency. So that’s what’s in my makeup bag – emergency makeup.

All of it is housed together in a monogrammed makeup bag from Sephora Collection with the letter “R” on it. While my full name is Rachelle, I prefer going by the nickname Chelle – however, I have never associated myself with having the initial “C”, so the “R” on the bag makes much more sense to me, even though it may seen a bit bizarre to people who know me only as Chelle!

The item I definitely have the most of in my makeup bag is lip products. Why I have so many lip products in here is actually a bit of a mystery since I’m more likely to grab my lip colour for the day at home and bring it in to the office with me. But these sit here in case I NEED something… which is funny because I don’t generally feel like I NEED lip colour.

Anyway, since I usually wear a bright eyeshadow look, I have a bunch of “safe” lip colours that fit most occasions. Bite‘s Glace and Fig, alongside Charlotte Tilbury‘s Bitch Perfect are the kind of shades that will suit nearly any eye look. Fig is my most used colour I’d say, as I’ve finished a full size bullet of it in the past and have a few minis and another full size sitting in my collection at home.

MAC‘s Russian Red is sitting in my bag because I’ve made it a point to wear this particular lipstick at least one day a week because I’m trying to finish it up. The Paul & Joe Limited 003 shade is a fun juicy red/pink that wears just like a balm, so I love popping that on for an easy look (usually if I’m wearing a neutral eye look). And lastly, I’ve got the Clarins Lip Oil in Tangerine in my bag. I absolutely LOVE those lip oils (I’ve gone through two other tubes before of various flavours) and having one on hand for the cold winter months always feels like a must.

Perhaps the most important thing in my work makeup bag are my liners. If anything is likely to go wrong with my makeup on any given day, it’s either my eyebrows disappearing off my face because I wore a toque in to work (seriously – I often lose the entire tail of my brows to my freaking hats), or my eyes will tear up due to the wind on my walk in to the office and my liner will start to dissolve – wreaking havoc on my eyeshadow look. So I keep two brow pencils in here – the Revlon Colorstay Brow Pencil in Blonde, and the It Cosmetics Brow Power Waterproof Perfector 5-in-1 Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil in Universal Taupe.  These are adequate products, although not my favourite brow items ever, but they are primarily kept in here because they’re so bloody LONG that they don’t actually fit in my acrylic drawer at home! They work well in a pinch, so I keep them at the office for emergencies.

As for liners, I have the Jesse’s Girl black liquid liner (it’s a brush tip, and lovely to use), as well as the Annabelle Skinny Gel Eye Pencil in case I need something that isn’t in a liquid format.

I was hesitant to even photograph these two because I have no idea how old they actually are… I’m fairly confident Covergirl no longer makes their Simply Ageless Eye Concealer, and I’ve likely owned it for… 7 years? Maybe 8? It doesn’t smell funky though, so I continue to use it. I’m not much of a concealer person, and heck I don’t even actually use this under my eyes – this is solely here in case my foundation decides to patch off anywhere on my face. Usual culprits are my nose or my chin, and I just dot the concealer over those areas and blend it out with my finger.

The mascara has also lived a very long life. It’s a mini size of the Smashbox Full Exposure mascara that I think I got with my PR sample of the Double Exposure palette back in the day. Oddly, this is my least used product in my makeup bag, but it does come out to play every now and then if I’ve missed a gap in my mascara, or, heaven forbid, I’ve completely forgotten to put on mascara that day. (It happens! I have no idea how, but it does!)

And lastly, these are what I call “my tools”. I’ve got a Sephora Collection set of blotting sheets (something I reach for frequently in the summer), a small Real Techniques mirror, a pair of tweezers (because you just never know when you’ll need a pair), a Sephora Collection lip brush (which also has a lid so that it stays mess free in my bag) and an ARTDECO Lip Primer which works really well to keep my lipstick in place.

So that’s what’s in my bag at the office. All laid out it looks like a freaking ton of product, but it actually all fits rather loosely in the makeup bag I have it in.

Do you keep makeup at the office like me? Or do have a makeup bag in your purse that you bring with you everywhere? Let me know!

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils (Review & Swatches)

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils

This is the first time in a long while (or maybe ever??) that I’ve been genuinely excited about what is essentially a lip balm. Some of you may have seen my August favourites video in which I professed my love for the Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil in Honey… well there’s a whole slew of other flavours to choose from now!

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils

Although the Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil formula is not a new one, what is new is the four new flavours they released on June 1, 2017. Although I had only been familiar with the original (I think it’s the original one anyway) flavour in Honey, I was really excited to try out the newly released additions to the lineup.

I initially started using a baby sample size I happened to have of the original Honey one because my lips were becoming extremely chapped from moving into our new condo and, for whatever reason, I get dry AF when we move. The Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil was a total saviour – not only was it super hydrating, but it also helped to lock in moisture because the product is quite thick. Not so thick that you feel like it’s a goopy mess, but the good kind of thickness where you know it’s doing something good to your lips.

The thing that’s really nice about these is that the formula is basically skincare that ends up looking like a luxurious lip gloss. They’re packed full with hazelnut and organic jojoba oils to help nourish and smooth your lips, while also providing an insanely glossy shine.

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil comes with a really bulbous applicator tip

There is one thing that makes me laugh about the product though, and that’s the bulbous applicator. It does do an excellent job of hugging the lips and delivering product, but it’s so enormous that you may actually fling some product on the walls or floor while you’re trying to pull out the applicator from the tube. Honestly, it’s more funny than anything else, but it IS something to be aware of! (Shawna of Spill the Beauty also noticed this in her recent review as well.)

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil - swatches
Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil – swatches
  • Candy: They say the scent is based on cherry, raspberry and strawberry mixed together, which I find somewhat accurate, although I think I’d just label it as “fruity”. It comes across as a glossy pink on the lips.
  • Tangerine: Although I love the glossy orange sheen of this one, I find it so bizarre that they labelled it tangerine and then made the scent red currant. Like… what? Still really lovely though!
  • Honey Glam: Easily my favourite out of all the new shades. It has the same delicious scent as the original Honey, but this time it’s chockful of gold glitter particles. The gold glitter is very apparent on the lips and looks absolutely beautiful – this would make for a great lipstick topper.
  • Mint: I get a lot more peppermint flavour than I do straight mint out of this one, but I do prefer peppermint, so that makes me really happy. This one contains a little bit of menthol so you feel notice a slight cooling/tingling sensation on your lips which is intended to help plump them up.

Final Thoughts

The Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils are absolutely winners in my book and I’m so glad they’ve extended the range to include new flavours. This product was an absolute saviour to my lips during the past month and you can bet your butt I’m going to be travelling with these little tubs of goodness the next time I get on a plane, or taking it anywhere with me where I run the risk of getting super dehydrated lips.

Online availability is a little bit all over the place for these. For Canadians, you can get the original range of Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils on sephora.ca for $25 CAD each or you can get the new shades and the old shades on beautyboutique.ca for the same price tag. For those in the USA,  you can purchase all of the shades on sephora.com for $26 USD each.

What’s On My Face – Volume 45

As I was putting together this roundup of looks, I started to realize just how much I’ve been using my Makeup Geek shadows lately. I mean, I use them a lot on a regular basis, but three out of the five looks are solely Makeup Geek in here!

I did this for a YouTube video tutorial but had to repost it here because I know not everyone has the time for videos (I’ll continue to repost my video tutorial looks on the blog as time goes on).

KAt Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix look

Although I love the Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix palette, I’ve not been using it because I was trying to work through a bunch of other palettes. I said enough was enough, and went back to it for it this look!

Travel Makeup Bag: Holiday 2015

Travel Makeup Bag: Holiday 2015

Yesterday, on Christmas Eve, we traveled from Toronto all the way over to Wisconsin for the holidays. We drove (well, I’m writing this in advance and yet I’m referring to myself in the future… so this is weird) the 11 hours or so it took to get to Wisconsin and brought the cats along with us. By the time you’re reading this on Christmas Day, we’ve hopefully made it safe and sound and I don’t want to strangle Kolme (she’s a howler when we travel). We’ll be staying with my husband’s family near Madison for Christmas and New Year’s, and I *pray* they get snow because Toronto sure doesn’t have any!

Two of the palettes I’m bringing are the brand new Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons and my Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow.

The Too Faced Bon Bons is a bit of a risk because I’ve barely played with the palette yet so I don’t really know what kind of looks I can come up with. It’s quite neutral which at least makes it fairly easy to play with while on vacation. The Charlotte Tilbury duo is going to be my only highlighter and bronzer on this trip. I like bringing more expensive products to use around Christmas time because it makes me feel kind of fancy. 🙂

Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp
Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp

The only other eyeshadows I’m bringing are in my Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp quad. If you saw my makeup tutorial on Wednesday, you’ll know that I love pairing these kind of darker cranberry shades on my lids throughout the holidays!

House of Lashes falsies in Noir Fairy and their lash glue
House of Lashes falsies in Noir Fairy and their lash glue

And of course, what’s the holidays without some dramatic lashes? I’m bringing along my Houses of Lashes lash glue and a pair of their lashes in Noir Fairy. They’re already cut down to size since I’ve worn them before so I needn’t worry about trimming them while on vacation.

Illamasqua Skin Base in 6.5 and the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
Illamasqua Skin Base in 6.5 and the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer

I say this every time I bring foundation on vacation, but I’ll say it again regardless… I haven’t a clue if I’ll even wear these. I’m not generally in love with foundation as I find I just want to tear it off my face after about 8 hours or so (it has nothing to do with the foundations thesmelves, just the general feeling of having paint on my face). I like the Smashbox primer because it’s tiny and works well, and the Illamasqua Skin Base is lovely to wear but doesn’t get enough use in my collection so I thought I’d bring it along as well.

The Body Shop - Shimmer Spray in Silver
The Body Shop – Shimmer Spray in Silver

And what’s the holidays without a little bit of shimmer spray?? Smells like vanilla and spews out silver shimmer… I loooove it!

Clarins Rosy Nude, MAC Russian Red, Too Faced Melted Berry and Bite Beauty's Maple Agave Lip Mask
Clarins Rosy Nude, MAC Russian Red, Too Faced Melted Berry and Bite Beauty’s Maple Agave Lip Mask

I never ever feel like I bring enough lip products when I travel because I swear I’ll get there and wish I brought different items! My Clarins Rosy Nude is a perfect neutral shade for every day wear, MAC Russian Red is a holiday staple for me, as is my Too Faced Melted Berry. The Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask in Maple is along for the ride to keep my lips hydrated and because the scent is so stinking delicious!

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, H&M Beauty lip primer, Make Up For Ever Glitter (25), MAC Brick lip liner, Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel crayon in Blacquer and Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, H&M Beauty lip primer, Make Up For Ever Glitter (25), MAC Brick lip liner, Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel crayon in Blacquer and Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch

Random assortment of items here… My Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper is a surefire liquid liner for all my travel purposes. I’ve got an H&M Beauty lip primer in there, a Make Up For Ever glitter (hello New Year’s!), MAC Brick lipliner, Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon in Blacquer and my favourite Make Up for Ever Smoky Stretch mascara.

201512_travelmakeupbag_blush

Another bit of a risk here… two medium to deep-toned blushes and no basic pink! Tarte Exposed has gotten a lot of love from me over the years (I’ve even hit pan on it!) and it a foolproof shade to match with the neutral eyeshadows I’ve packed. And of course, there’s my beloved Clinique Cola Pop. I can’t believe I haven’t worn the flower embossing down a bit more, I wear it constantly!

201512_travelmakeupbag2

And all of that is crammed into a medium sized Sephora makeup bag. Merry Christmas everyone!
