Wedding Anniversary – Hair & Makeup

201508_weddinganniversary

My fifth wedding anniversary was in July, and we had a lovely dinner out in Toronto. I kept it fairly simple: I curled hair (my husband’s favourite style on me) and did some makeup that semi-matched what I was wearing (because really, I have no idea how to do this contrasting business).

So I took it from this:

No makeup, freshly washed and dried hair

To this:

Tada!
Tada!

And here’s how I did it:

I always start out with doing my makeup first- it’s the most time consuming portion and the one I have the most fun doing. I also hate having my hair in my face when I’m trying to blend foundation (although, in hindsight, I didn’t apply any for this night out) because it’ll inevitably end up in my hair!

I didn’t really have anything planned out for our anniversary, so I opted to use a palette I don’t get around to using as much as I wish I did! Using the Urban Decay Vice 3 palette (the 2014 holiday release), here’s what I did:

Eyes

  1. Undone through the crease to make blending easier.
  2. Bobby Dazzle and Last Sin mixed together and packed all over the lid.
  3. Heroine in the outer corner and dragged through the crease.
  4. I used the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder in Ethereal Light to highlight the brow bone.

I then created the wing with Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper and applied Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch mascara to my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Bronzer: Hard Candy Hula Hula
  • Blush: Hourglass Diffused Heat
  • Highlighter: Becca Champagne Pop
  • Lips: Bite Beauty Fig

With my makeup done, now was the time to tackle my hair. I had never tried the KISS InstaWave hair curling tool before and was really curious to see how it would compare to my normal technique of using a flat iron to create my curls.

The tool has a button that spins the barrel either clockwise or counter clockwise. The spokes you see at the base of the wand help to corkscrew your hair onto the barrel and keep it in position. To get your hair to spin into place on the barrel, all you need to do is hold a section of hair perpendicular to the barrel, hit the button to rotate the wand, and it’ll automatically suck your hair on the barrel and curl it whichever direction you chose. I let the hair sit for a little bit on the barrel before I release it.

Beautiful curls!
Beautiful curls!

Et voila! Ringlet curls! I don’t brush them out because I prefer them tighter and they’ll relax over time anyway. My first impression is that I think the  KISS InstaWave is pretty decent for people who aren’t great at curling their hair – it a foolproof product since it does the whole wrapping motion for you. It also heats up lighting fast.

It's even pretty easy to get everything at the back of your head too!

I think it’s awesome that it rotates both ways so you can choose what style you’re going for without having to crane your arms and neck. It also doesn’t clamp your hair like a flat iron or a true curling iron does so keep that in mind. For those of you who want a much tighter curl at the root, this won’t get you that. However, because it’s not as tight at the root, nor does it clamp your hair, you may actually save yourself a little bit of heat damage there (although that’s not something I’m personally that fussed about).

I sprayed my hair with a bunch of hairspray to make sure my hair stayed in place (it was a pretty humid night) and there we go! All done!

The KISS InstaWave hair curling tool was sent to me for consideration.

    1. Yeah I love them too!

This was the only Vice palette I picked up because I just wasn’t into the others… and yeah, I gotta say…. I do love it!

  1. Ohhh, I can easily understand why your husband prefers you with curls, you look absolutely stunning! And I have the KISS InstaWave too and it’s freaking brilliant! I never had any luck curling my hair with curling iron but KISS InstaWave makes it so easy.

    1. I love the curls too, but man can it be a hassle sometimes! The InstaWave definitely makes it easier, but I still feel like I need to “plan” for curls you know? lol

  2. I love this look! I am so jealous you don’t have to wear foundation. 😉 I have the Instawave and though I love it in theory it just doesn’t work on short hair. If I ever have the patience to grow my hair out I look forward to trying it again!

    1. I can see how it wouldn’t work on shorter hair since it really doesn’t get close down to the roots. I could see it still being able to give some swoop to your ends though – have you tried that? Almost like a tousled/beachy look maybe?

I am pretty lucky with my skin since I only ever really wear foundation for “fun”. Which I realize sounds utterly ridiculous, but it does help make blush and highlighter look a lot smoother!

    1. Thanks Eithne! Are you guys surrre you need foundation though? Maybe you just feel like you do?

And yes, I do love curls! It really makes my hair look a lot more voluminous without adding any product in!

  3. Congratulations! You look beautiful in both the before and after. I can see why you don’t need foundation (and I’m totally jelly 😉) Your makeup is perfect, as usual, but those curls! 😍

    1. Hah! I guess a lot of people don’t realize that only about half of the shots in my makeup round ups are with foundation, the other half don’t have any on! I suppose I thought people were more aware of that – oops!

Thank you for your sweet comments. 🙂

  4. Ah, the curls are super pretty on you! I’m so lazy with styling my hair, but I do bring out the curling iron for special occasions 🙂 Happy belated anniversary!

    1. Thanks Jen! Hair really does take such a backseat in my routine because I’d much rather spend my time doing my makeup! It’s funny how hair curling always equals special occasions (I’m the same way!).

  5. Happy anniversary!! Your look and hair are superb! I love how the eyes go from light to deep and defined! And your hair is fab! I’m always jealous of people who curl/wave their hair easily. My entire head to style in the same as yours takes at least 45 mins…and the waves never last longer than a few hours. I have super resistant and thick hair! :p

    1. Thanks Sharlynn!

I would love to have super thick hair, so don’t get down on yourself for that! Although I do understand how not being able to hold a curl would be very, very frustrating!

  6. Wow, your hair looks beautiful! I would love to give this a try! I have so much hair (and long) that curling usually takes foreveeeer and I’d rather just so my makeup. Lol

    Happy (belated) anniversary!!!

  7. Ahhh I need this in my life, curling my hair is suuuuch a pain. I always miss spots at the back too. Your makeup is on point, as always!

    1. You can borrow mine if you want to give it a shot sometime!

Back of the hair is usually such a nightmare. I typically have to ask my husband if I missed anything!

    1. THANK YOU! You’re so sweet. The eyeshadow was a quick one – it’s soooo easy to work with Heroine since it’s deeply pigmented and blends out so lovely!

  8. Happy belated anniversary! Your hair. I’m so jealous. I’m terrible at curling my hair. It’s naturally curly, so I usually just scrunch the heck out of it and hope it looks decent. My husband prefers it curly and worn down. He kinda hates it when I wear it pulled back. The things we do for our men, amiright? lol j/k
Also, I gotta pull out my Vice 3 and recreate what you did.

    1. I did have a perm once in my teens and it was the nicest thing ever – all I had to do was add in some mousse when it was wet and I was good to go!

I’m often too lazy to curl my hair so I’ll yank it back and be like “meh”. haha
